iPad surges past Android, iPod Touch

According to NetApplications, browser usage share on the iPad has already surpassed usage share on both the Android platform and the iPod touch.

Since the number of Android and iPod Touch units sold vastly outnumber iPad units sold, Net Applications concludes that this is an indication that the iPad is used much more frequently per user for browsing.

What’s interesting is that whilst the iPod Touch share has remained static, the Android’s has doubled.  It’s just that the iPad has seen phenomenal growth from zero to the current share of 0.17%, 0.3% higher than Android.

Obviously these are very small numbers but one needs to remember that this is the browser share of all Internet traffic, not just mobile platforms.  And the iPad’s emergence comes after only three months on the market.  Things can only get even better from here.

Pages turning over mighty iPad sales

Pages turning over mighty iPad sales

According to a new report from analyst, @Distimo – http://www.distimo.com, in April 2010, the highest ranked paid iPad application in the Apple App Store was Pages, followed by GoodReader for iPad, and Pinball HD. The highest ranked free iPad application in the Apple App Store was iBooks, followed by The Solitaire and Break HD Free.

The majority of the 10 highest ranked paid applications were published in the following categories in April 2010: Productivity (Apple App Store for iPad), Games (Apple App Store for iPhone), Themes (BlackBerry App World), News & Weather (Google Android Market), Games (Nokia Ovi Store), Productivity & Utilities (Palm App Catalog) and in Games (Windows Marketplace for Mobile).

In the Apple App Store, paid applications in the Top Overall, Games, Business and Entertainment categories stay in these categories for 27, 39, 59 and 38 days on average, respectively. Free applications stay in the Top 100 for a significantly shorter time in the Top Overall, Games and Business categories, with 19, 21 and 39 days on average, respectively.

In the Apple App Store, the majority of paid applications that have been in the Top 100 Overall during the entire period of November 2009 – April 2010 fall into the Games and Entertainment categories.

iPad Apps Go International

One of the frustrations of being an early adopter has been the inability to purchase apps for the iPad directly from the iTunes app store. Previously, iPads not being on sale yet anywhere other than the US, you needed a US iTunes account in order to be able to see and purchase apps that would work natively on the device. Now, all that has changed. You can log in to the app store and buy iPad apps like the FT or USA Today with a UK account, although some products, like iBooks and the iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) suite remain unavailable – although this will presumably be fixed when the iPad ships internationally next week.

The iPad Unboxed

iPad – Unboxing Video from Brian Stark on Vimeo.

Sometimes you have to suffer for your art!

This is a really cool video created by brand new iPad owner Brian Stark.  My iPad is a couple of days away in shipping from the US and I was planning on doing an’out of box’ experience myself, but having seen this work of art, I don’t think anything will top this (well, not unless you’re Tim Burton and want to do the phantasmagorial new iPad user experience with a budget of $50 million).

This is a stop-motion animation that delayed the creator from  getting hands on with his new iPad more than an hour as he painstakingly filmed each part of the unwrapping process.
